A Little Bit of Ketchup

Please ignore the totally lame pun in the entry title.  It's almost midnight where I am, I had a long, hard night at work, I spent the last hour calming myself down after a crying fit and I'm back on pain meds for my ankle.

Today's topics: My Birthday disappointment; Thoughts on Castle:  Cloudy With a Chance of Murder, Revolution: No Quarter, and New Girl: Fluffer

So Wednesday is my birthday, and today I was sitting around thinking "You know, I bet I'm able to do a hike now, as long as it's not too long or difficult.  I don't think I'm quite up to it tomorrow, and I work the rest of the weekend, and next weekend is out because the only day I'm off is my birthday party... But you know what?  I'm off Wednesday.  And it's my birthday so I can pretty much do whatever I want.  I could go on a hike in the morning and then have a big burger for lunch.  MMmmm burger.  I've been craving one of those for a few days.  Yeah, let's do that!"  So I informed my mom what I wanted to do, pulled out The Hiker's Guide to Oahu and picked out a run.  When I got to work, I was telling everyone about how I was going on a hike on Wednesday and how I'll finally be able to try out my new shoes, etc etc etc.  And then around 7 o'clock, my foot started to hurt.  When I finally got home from my very busy shift, I cried.  Not because work was so stressful (although it was) and not because my foot hurt so much it made me cry.  No, I cried because if I can't go five hours at work, on a flat surface without my foot hurting, there's no way I'll be able to hike a few miles in the mountains and forests of Hawaii.  And I was so looking forward to it.  It's been almost seven weeks since my last hike and a month since I bought a pair of new hiking shoes (that are still in the original box).  And I can't go hiking on my birthday.  I still might get Mom to take me for that burger, but it won't be the same without a post-hike appetite.

This past Wednesday, I worked with Ashley.  Since we both watch a lot of the same shows (although not a lot of the same movies), we can usually get into quite a conversation about TV.  One of the ones we've been talking about the most recently is Castle.  When I showed up for work Wednesday, I hadn't had a chance to see the newest episode yet.  Ashley told me that it wasn't quite up to the usual par; it lacked much of the wit that attracts both of us to the show.  Last night, I watch the episode on Hulu and I'd have to agree with her assessment.  I was afraid that finally bringing the two main characters together might mean the end of the show and if the rest of the season follows the path set so far, I doubt I'll keep watching it (especially once Psych starts; there's a show that managed to take a romance 5 years in the making and use it to improve the show, not spiral it downwards).  I'll give Castle a few more episodes to get its bearings with this shift in relationships, but I'm not sticking around a sinking ship for too long.

Revolution I did watch Wednesday (as planned).  I don't know.  Like a lot of science fiction series, it has a lot of potential, but so far it's not living up to it.  It's rather predictable, most of the characters annoy me (at least to a small extent) and the actors don't seem to pull their character off half the time.  About the only thing it has going for it right now (in my mind) is the concept and the visuals.  There are some amazing visuals.  I keep watching, hoping it'll get better, but instead of a line that goes up (or at least fluctuates), it's pretty much a flat surface.  According to Wikipedia, this season is supposed to be 22 episodes.  I'll give it to episode 6 before deciding to continue on any farther than that.  But I will watch at least the next three episodes.  I'm really wishing Teranova hadn't been canceled right when it was about to get really interesting...

As for New Girl... I. Loved. It.  The interplay between Jess and Nick was amusing.  Okay, it made me laugh out loud several times.  As for Schmidt impersonating a Romney... All I can say is that if I hadn't erased this episode from my DVR on auto-pilot, I would have watched it at least once more.  That's a show that has definitely improved.  When it first came out, I was only watching it because I love Zooey Deschanel and I hoped it would get better.  Now, it's one of the highlights of my TV week because I love the characters and the interpersonal relationships and I know I'll always get a few laughs out of it.

My mouse pad is acting a little funky, so I think I'll call this an entry and restart my computer now that I'm finally all caught up in my TV commentary.  Later!
